Portfolios Are Coming Home!

Over the next few weeks portfolios will be going home full of all the wonderful artwork created by Walker students! Please empty your students portfolio and send it back to the art room for storage over the summer. In the fall an updated label with your child's name and new classroom will be added. Now you won’t have to worry about returning your portfolio the first day of school.

Believe in Green

Join us on Saturday, April 10, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Clarendon Hills Middle School for Believe in Green, an environmental expo that will both educate and inspire all of us to make environmentally-conscious lifestyle changes that can improve our quality of life.

Also look for the “Raining Cats & Dogs” themed rain barrel created by Walker 5th grade Art Club. The rain barrel and nine others will be on display at the fair. All the rain barrels will be auctioned off to raise money to support the District #181 Foundation. Bidding begins at 10:00 am and closes at 2:30 pm.

Young Sloppy Brush

The famous star from the movie Young Sloppy Brush will be visiting Walker’s Art Room from February 12th through the 21st! (YSB is missing in action! Stay tuned for updates on when he will arrive at Walker.) Walker is week 16 on Young Sloppy Brush’s 30 week school tour. This collaborative project is modeled loosely after the Flat Stanley Project.
Art teacher Tricia Fuglestad and the 5th grade students from Dryden Elementary School created this award winning movie. Below is an excerpt from the official site about how the movie got started.

Young Sloppy Brushes Story
Young Sloppy Brush all began from a suggestion by an art teacher in Texas who wished there was a Fugleflick about taking care of paintbrushes. My fifth grade students volunteered to spend their recesses telling this tragic yet educational tale of neglect and destruction. After three weeks of writing, singing, voice overs, and acting (with brushes) we had a final product! We really thought we had something special so we entered it into a local film fest, ScreenTest Student Fest where it won Best of Show!

From there the movie went onto...
The Chicago International Children's Film Festival
Kids for Kids Film Fest Naples, Italy.
Little Big Shots International Film Fest traveled all over Singapore, New Zealand including a showing in Australia's famous Sydney Opera House!

All Day, Every Day, for the Entire Month  Warm up to free general admission this February. It’s the perfect time to visit an old favorite, explore the Modern Wing, take in a special exhibition, and enjoy the wealth of fascinating programming.

If you’re looking for a break from cooking and want to treat the family then mark your calendar for PTA benefit nights at local restaurants and grocery stores. Details from the Walker Wednesday News are located below. So go ahead and take a night off of cooking to treat your family and help Walker PTA!
